Virgin Mary the Directress

This handcrafted icon depicts Virgin Mary (Theotokos) as the Virgin Mary the Directress, also known in the Byzantine tradition as the Hodegetria, “She Who Shows the Way.” 

The Theotokos is portrayed holding the Christ Child in her left arm while gently gesturing toward Him with her right hand, directing the faithful to Christ as the source of salvation and eternal life. 

Her calm and solemn expression reflects compassion, wisdom, and maternal protection. The Christ Child is shown blessing with one hand while holding a scroll, symbolizing divine wisdom and the Gospel message. Both figures bear radiant halos, affirming their sacred and holy nature within the Orthodox Christian tradition.

The garments of the Virgin Mary are painted in deep burgundy and rich earth tones with delicate golden details, symbolizing humility, royalty, and spiritual grace. The Christ Child is clothed in luminous golden garments, representing divine glory and heavenly light. The balanced composition and refined lines follow the traditional Byzantine iconographic style that has been preserved for centuries.

The background is covered with genuine 24-karat gold leaf, carefully applied by hand.
