Saint John the Baptist

This icon depicts John the Baptist, shown in the traditional Byzantine style as Saint John the Baptist and Forerunner of the Lord. 

He is portrayed in the wilderness with angelic wings, symbolizing his divine mission as the messenger sent to prepare the way for Christ. In one hand he holds a Cross-staff, representing his prophetic calling and witness to the coming of the Savior, while in the other he carries a scroll inscribed with his message of repentance and spiritual renewal. His ascetic appearance, long hair, and garment of camel hair reflect his life of fasting, prayer, and solitude in the desert.

At the lower part of the icon appears the symbolic depiction of his severed head upon a platter, representing his martyrdom for the sake of truth and righteousness. Above him, Christ is shown blessing from heaven, affirming Saint John’s sacred role in salvation history. The mountainous landscape and vivid wings emphasize the spiritual and prophetic character of the composition, following the rich symbolism of Byzantine iconography.

The background is covered with genuine 24-karat gold leaf, carefully applied by hand. The gold used is real 24K gold. The pigments are specially prepared traditional mixtures, following the methods used in historic iconography. These materials make the icon highly durable and resistant, allowing it to be preserved for hundreds of years, as seen in surviving ancient icons.
