Virgin Mary Axion Esti

This icon depicts Virgin Mary as the Panagia Axion Esti, one of the most revered and miraculous representations of the Mother of God in Orthodox Christian tradition. 

The title “Axion Esti,” meaning “It is Truly Meet,” refers to the celebrated hymn revealed through angelic revelation on Mount Athos, glorifying the Virgin Mary as the most blessed among all creation.

The Theotokos is portrayed holding the Christ Child lovingly in her arms while gently inclining her head toward Him, expressing tenderness, compassion, and divine motherhood. Christ is shown seated upon her lap, holding a scroll that symbolizes divine wisdom, truth, and salvation. The serene and contemplative expression of the Virgin reflects mercy, humility, and her eternal intercession for the faithful. Her deep red garments symbolize sacrifice, purity, and royal dignity, while the blue inner garments represent heavenly grace and spiritual purity.

The background is covered with genuine 24-karat gold leaf, carefully applied by hand. The gold used is real 24K gold. The pigments are specially prepared traditional mixtures, following the methods preserved through centuries of Byzantine iconography. These authentic materials provide exceptional depth of color, brilliance, and durability.
